Field Trip to PT. Madubaru: Studying the Application of Microbiology in the Sugar and Spirits Industry
Yogyakarta - In order to deepen their practical understanding of the application of microorganisms in the industrial world, students of the Biology Education Study Program successfully organized a Field Trip to PT. Madubaru (PG-PS Madukismo). This activity was part of the learning agenda for the Industrial Microbiology course.
This visit aimed to provide a firsthand look at the production process of sugar and spirits, as well as the role of microbiology in the fermentation stages. Students had the opportunity to observe the processing of sugarcane into sugar, and the utilization of molasses (sugarcane waste) which is processed into spirits through microbiological processes.
Through this activity, students not only learned theory in the classroom but also gained a real-world perspective on industrial scale, quality control, and the utilization of biotechnology in the food and energy sectors. Interactive discussions with expert staff at the factory further enriched the students' insights into career prospects and the application of biological sciences in the industry.
With the completion of this field trip, it is hoped that students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of applied microbiology and be motivated to develop research that benefits both the industry and society.
